Function of a butterfly valve
Butterfly valves control the flow of a medium through a pipeline, with a rotating disc in the flow path regulating the flow. When the disc is parallel to the flow, the valve is fully open.

Variants and differences
Butterfly valves are versatile, designed to be flow efficient and easy to automate. They are characterized by robustness, a long service life and a high number of switching cycles.
Manually operated butterfly valves
Manual butterfly valves can be operated using a worm gear or a hand lever. The hand lever has up to 10 locking positions and uses a ratchet disc to indicate the current position of the valve disc.

Butterfly valves with pneumatic drive
Pneumatically operated butterfly valves are often used in potentially explosive areas because they are safer than electrical versions. There are two types of pneumatic actuators:
Double-acting: The flap is operated with compressed air both for opening and closing.
Single-acting: The flap is operated in one direction by compressed air, while springs ensure return.
Butterfly valves with electric drive
Electric butterfly valves are particularly ideal for applications where frequent or remote operation is required.
In explosive environments, pneumatic solutions are preferred for safety reasons.
Automation of butterfly valves
Butterfly valves can be operated both manually and automatically. The following questions must be clarified when selecting the appropriate actuator:
What is the required torque of the valve disc?
Is it a lubrication-free medium?
Is electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic operation required?
Should the drive run in normal or control mode?
Spare parts for butterfly valves
Depending on the type of medium and the operating conditions, the sleeve of a butterfly valve can wear out, especially with aggressive media. Replacement sleeves in various designs and sizes are available. Some sleeves have additional reinforcement rings for increased resistance.
